The following are some of the comments we received along with the replies on our recent survey. These are the opinions and frustrations of ordinary parents. The names of those who commented are being withheld to preserve the confidentiality of the survey and those who commented.
There are numerous other comments from parents and children. We have brought copies of all of these comments to the attention of the Department officials. They will also be sent to the board of Management of Gorey Community school and we will endeavour to have a selection of them printed in the local media. This campaign is great as every parent should have a choice as where to send their children.
My only gripe with the "withdrawal of choice" is unacceptably taking our liberty away is a dangerous precedent for the future choices parents make.
I do not consider Kilmuckridge Vocational School a Suitable alternative.
I think the sibling rule discriminates against children who do not have siblings and this is compounded by the fact that GCS allowed enrolment of pupils from outside it's "traditional" catchment area where such pupils do actually have an alternative choice and now their siblings have priority over our children who have ALWAYS traditionally attended Gorey CS and our children are now excluded.
My only comment is why should we not have what we always had
Other secondary schools are a longer commute for our children and would necessitate either parent to be available during the day for dropping, collecting and after school activities. This would exclude one parent from working. The country is already experiencing great difficulty finding workers. This has had a serious impact on salary levels and Ireland's competitiveness in attractin foreign industry. Is it really in the Governments interest to make it any more difficult for parents to go out to work?
Many thanks to B.E.A.G for all the hard work being undertaken on our behalf.
It is totally unacceptable to exclude pupils from the school because of where they live.
We hope B.E.A.G. is successful in their endeavour, as if not we may have to consider uprooting our entire family as we have two young children also, who will need access to Gorey CS. This decision will have a detrimental effect on our entire family.
Just to say I feel a new secondary school is now needed in the area. The population is growing fast in the area and we need more schools
I fully support the campaign
My older brothers and sisters all attended the 3 different schools at the time in Gorey. I believe it is very wrong to take this choice away from our children.
By refusing my child entry to Gorey Community School you are taking away my freedom of choice and refusing my child the same education as her brothers had. This is des crimination.
Until the Dept. of E + S concludes it's survey into the needs on second level education in Gorey and until the vocational college is completed in Kilmuckridge, the Dept. BOM of GCS should allow the existing enrolment policy to continue.
Most of my child's closest friends may go to Gorey because they have siblings attending, leaving him after maintaining friendships since junior infants - discriminatory.
We think the pupils from Ballygarrett N.S. should be allowed to obtain their education in Gorey CS as we always had the option to do so. Goer CS has a better variety of subjects
We already reside in the Gorey catchment area.
We have recently returned from overseas to give our children a chance to go to school in Gorey like I did. As we only came home last Easter I spent the first month living in Courtown. If I had known I would have sent my children there, but I wanted them to go to Ballygarrett like I did.
